The 2025 Annual Bull Sale

The 2025 Annual Bull Sale is fast approaching! The date is Friday, the 16th of May and is located here at Rosedale in Blayney, NSW.

This is our 36th Annual Bull sale and we are pleased to announce the draft of bulls in this year’s sale, which is all possible with the strong breeding herd we have built up from the past 50 years. We are proud to see females from our previous sire lines becoming great mothers and stamping their quality into their progeny.

The past five years have been quite unexpected for the beef industry, however, the past 12 months have been more consistent, which provides a sense of stability for buyers and producers. When production is efficient, we can focus on producing quality meat and achieving maximum production. Getting your produce to market weight as quick as possible is beneficial as:

  1. The quicker an animal can get to market weights the lower the carbon footprint of that animal
  2. The younger a beast is processed the better the tenderness, so this relates to higher meat quality
  3. The quicker an animal is turned off means it frees up resources in terms of both land and labour and this translates into greater profitability for an enterprise.

By purchasing a Rosedale bull, you are purchasing a bull that aims to have all of these qualities above, as we are dedicated to developing Charolais infused genetics to suit the modern day Australian cattlemen and cattlewomen. This years Charolais bulls are once again dominated by homozygous polled bulls and we are proud that all bulls offered are polled. We are focusing on a type that will produce sufficient weight gains but wont let you down on carcase quality.

What to look for when purchasing a Charolais bull?

At Rosedale Charolais, we have spent three generations selecting for critical traits in our polled Charolais and composite bulls. There are three main essential traits to look out for when purchasing a Charolais that we believe to be the most important. These characteristics include the foot structure, temperament and body type.

Foot Structure

The foot structure of a Charolais bull is important to look out for, for many reasons. Poor feet can lead to mobility issues. This can reduce the breeding capacity of the bull, therefore reducing its productive life. A bull that can’t walk won’t work.

Temperament

The bulls’ temperament is essential to consider as aggressive bulls create dangerous conditions. This can be harmful to you or other animals on your farm. Bulls with an aggressive temperament also produce difficult calves that can be hard to manage.

Body type

The right body type of a bull is a factor to look at when purchasing a bull as a balanced structure will enhance your herd’s productivity and profitability. Ensuring they are of the right weight and size suited to what you’re after are key features to note.

2022 RAS BEEF CHALLENGE – FEEDLOT TRIAL

Rosedale genetics performed admirably in the 2022 Royal Agricultural Society’s Beef Challenge. In our 11th year entering the competition , Millner AG from Geurie won the Overall Individual Champion Animal in the Domestic section (70 Days on Feed) as well as Winning the Top Eating quality in the same section with a Charolais x Shorthorn team. The competition is a commercially focussed feedlot competition representing all stages of the process including live assessment, carcase judging, profitability and eating quality.

Rosedale Charolais Win 2021 NSW Beef Spectacular

The 2022 NSW Beef spectacular turned out to be one of the most successful Feedlot and carcase trials we have been a part of that our breeding and genetic program is on track and performing well under real industry conditions.
Rosedale was successful in winning the Grand Champion team as well as the Reserve Champion team, an unprecedented event in the competitions 13-year history. To add some cream on top two other teams featuring Rosedale genetics entered by Michael and Jenny Millner finished 5th and 6th giving Rosedale sired teams 4 out of the top 6 places.
This years competition included 74 different teams from leading stud and commercial producers from Australia’s Eastern seaboard with entrants mainly from NSW but also some Victorian and Queensland Entries. The cattle are on a level playing field as they all enter Teys Jindalee feedlot at the same time at similar weights and ages. The cattle are fed for 100 Days under normal feedlot conditions HGP Free and then processed at Teys plant in Wagga on the same day. Points are allocated for not only feedlot weight gain but also Carcase qualities.

2019 Royal Brisbane Show Paddock to Plate Winners

Rosedale had a very strong showing taking out 1st and 2nd place in the 2019 70 Day Domestic section of the EKKA’s prestigious paddock to plate competition.The two teams of Charolais/Red Angus steers entered Mort and CO’s Grass Dale Feedlot in a large field with cattle coming from leading producers northern NSW and Queensland.The Rosedale Steers performed Strongly in the Feedlot averaging 2.6kg/Day weight gain and then Won the Champion Pen Of Carcase’s, Reserve Champion Carcase, followed by finishing 2nd and 3rd in the MSA eating quality section of the competition. This was a strong all-round performance and in particular very pleasing to finish so strongly in the carcase section of the competition. It follows our mantra that crossbreeding with carcase focussed Charolais not only delivers strong performance in a grass or grain situation but also leads to quality Meat eating.

Branga Plains Claims 2019 Sydney Royal Beef Challenge win Rosedale Genetics

Long Term clients Branga Plains Pastoral Company took out the 70 Day Domestic Competition in one of the largest fields ever in the 2019 Sydney Royal Beef Challenge. Branga Plains Pastoral Company operated by Guy and Suz Lord from Walcha dominated all aspects of the competition in a field of 52 entries winning the Champion Team for weight gain, Winning the Live Judging aspect of the competition and Winning Champion team for carcase with the highest total points score on the hook. Obvioulsy they won the overall component as well with their team bred From Rosedale Composite bulls crossed with British based females in their cow herd.

Australian Beef Farmer of the Year 2017

Each Year 18 of the best Farmers are nominated from across Australia with three finalists from the Following categories. Beef, Crops, Dairy, Horticulture, Sheep and lifestyle. The competition is nationwide and run by the Weekly Times Newspaper and sponsored by Coles Supermarkets. It is a highly prestigious competition with the awards night held in Melbourne attended by many of the nations leading politicians and Agribusiness leaders. This is the 7th year of the competition.

Winner of The Beef Spectacular 2018 Riverine Classic

One of the Largest Grain Fed and Carcase Competitions in Australia. Each year over 90 of the best and most respected producers in Eastern Australia enter teams of 5 Steers into the competition involving 110 days on grain at Teys Jindalee in NSW. The steers are all run under identical conditions throughout the trial allowing superior genetics to set the teams apart. Teams are judged on live performance as well as carcase quality under real life industry conditions and benchmarks. All breeds are eligible for entry.

Winner of The Australian National Field Days Grain Fed Trial 2018

One of the largest and longest running grain fed trials in New South Wales. Each year many of the states top producers enter teams of steers into the competition and feedback is gained on feedlot performance, live animal assessment as well as quality of carcase. The thing that sets this trial apart from other grain fed competitions is the fact that all cattle are backgrounded together prior to entry into the competition to further highlight genetic differences upon feedlot entry.

The 2017 Farmer of the Year Awards

FORGET about paddock to plate: the Millner family have the beef industry wrapped up from source to main course.
The family, from central NSW, juggles running one of Australia’s biggest polled Charolais studs with a growing commercial enterprise and, more recently, a paddock-to-plate brand that is feeding the growing Asian appetite for quality beef.

The centrepiece of the operation, run across 6500 hectares in three districts at Blayney, Dubbo and Coonamble, is the Rosedale Charolais stud, founded in 1970 and the oldest registered Charolais herd in NSW selling more than 150 bulls a year.

The Rosedale herd comprises 400 registered Charolais females and 1200 predominantly Angus and Shorthorn commercial cows.

The stud cows are run at Blayney with the commercial herd split between Dubbo and Coonamble. It’s a strategic move aimed at drought-proofing the operation, according to brothers James and Robert Millner, who are in charge of the stud and commercial operations respectively.

The Rosedale herd is at the cutting edge of the industry with the use of science and technology paramount to the business. Breed pioneers when it comes to the uptake of Breedplan performance recording, the Millners have also used hybrid vigour as a way of lifting growth rates, and profits, both within their own herd and those of their clients.

In the commercial herd, the best 50 per cent of the steers and heifers are fattened on oat crops and lucerne silage, and sold to the Coles grass-fed program, with the remainder sent to a northern NSW feedlot where they are finished for the Millners’ Rosedale Ruby beef brand.

Rosedale Ruby started as “an exciting side venture” five years ago and has exceeded all expectations.

Throughput has grown from 50 cattle a month in 2012 to 600 now. China and Hong Kong are the biggest export markets for Rosedale Ruby, with Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Switzerland and the Middle East also prominent.

It is this worldly outlook, backed up by superior genetics, marketing and product, that makes Rosedale Charolais worthy winners of The Weekly Times Coles 2017 Beef Farmer of the Year.
